Travelers departing from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA 1) no longer need to clear through two security checks before boarding their flights.

Travelers departing from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA 1) no longer need to clear through two security checks before boarding their flights.

Since January 1, the security scanning machines at KLIA 1 were relocated as part of efforts to ease the flow of passengers in the terminal building while enhancing the detection of smuggled goods. Travelers can proceed directly to the security/customs check at the boarding gate after immigration clearance.

Previously, departing passengers had to pass through the first security check managed by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department at the link bridge of KLIA 1 after the immigration check. The second security check – operated by Malaysia Airports' Aviation Security (AVSEC) group – is done as passengers enter the boarding gate.

In a report by BERNAMA posted on January 2, KLIA 1 Operations General Manager Abd Hasman Abd Muhimin said: “By shifting the inspection process to gate security screening, it helps reduce queuing time by between five and eight minutes during peak hours, thereby providing a better travel experience for passengers departing from KLIA Terminal 1.”

The move was implemented as past of a collaboration between Malaysia's Ministry of Transport, airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, Royal Malaysian Customs Department, and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency. KLIA 1 recently had 60 high-technology scanning machines installed at the terminal's international departure gates.

“This measure does not compromise the level of security or customs enforcement. On the contrary, passenger and goods inspection will continue to be strengthened through operational coordination and compliance with jointly agreed procedures," the transport ministry said in a statement.
